Liverpool Weighing Up Deal To Sign Veteran Free-Agent Gudjohnsen
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is weighing up a surprise move for veteran Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.
The 34-year-old is old of contract after leaving AEK Athens in July and Rodgers believes the former Chelsea striker could still do a job in the Premier League.
The Reds are desperately short of strikers after Rodgers agreed to allow £35m man Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan but failed to land either Clint Dempsey or Daniel Sturridge, following confusion over his allotted transfer budget.
Liverpool have been linked with a surprise move for former striker Michael Owen but Rodgers is not interested in the 32-year-old Englishman.
The Northern Irishman is keen to bolster his front-line with a free agent, however, and believes that stylish Gudjohnsen can still perform at the highest level.
The former Barcelona forward struggled for form and fitness during his last stints in the Premier League with Stoke City and Fulham but Liverpool are prepared to offer him a short-term contract and place him on an intense fitness regime to get the classy striker up to speed.
Rodgers believes that Gudjohsen will suit his passing game and could provide a good foil for Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini the only recognised senior forwards currently at Anfield.
Liverpool may face competition from Eastern Europe for Gudjohnsen, with a number of Russian outfits also reportedly considering a move for the star.
