Everton ready to ward off Manchester United by rewarding Leighton Baines with new deal
Everton boss Roberto Martinez says the club are keen to reward Leighton Baines with a new contract and at the same time keep the left-back out of the clutches of Manchester United.
Former Toffees manager David Moyes is thought to be interested in taking Baines to Old Trafford as he looks to stamp his mark on the Manchester United squad ahead of the new season.
But Martinez, looking to prevent a mass exodus from Goodison Park with Marouanne Fellaini also linked with a move away, says Everton will be offering Baines a new deal in recognition of his services to the club.
It is very important and its (about) rewarding players who have been phenomenal for the football club and I think Leighton is in that category, said the former Wigan manager.
The chairman is very keen to express that and obviously Im desperately looking forward to meeting the players.
For Leighton, as the top performer he has been in the last few years, it is important that we reward his work and make sure that he can look forward to kicking on and go into the next chapter of his career with Everton.
Thats important for the club as a whole, not just the dressing room.
