Microsoft promises better Games with Gold games
Phil Spencer has said Games with Gold is fundamentally different to PlayStation Plus, but hinted the service will improve in time.
The Xbox exec was speaking at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, where he tried to address concerns that Games with Gold is continually coming up second best to PlayStation Plus.
According to website Polygon he insisted that Games with Gold is fundamentally different because it lets you keep the games even if you no longer subscribe to Xbox Live unlike PlayStation Plus, where you loose access to them if you stop subscribing.
The business around Games with Gold, for us, is just fundamentally different from some of the other programs that are out there, which does put a different financial picture on a youre going to go buy a game thats brand new, the cost of putting that in, just to be kind of blunt about it.
However, Spencer did try to assure fans that he would be personally involved in improving the service in the future.
I have been sitting down, monthly now, with that team some of the earlier months were already programmed and playing a more active role in picking franchises that show up in Games with Gold, and I think youll see at least something that feels, at least, more true to what I think Games with Gold should look like with the constraints that are there.
Games with Gold was first announced at E3 2013 in June, with the promise of two free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers every month. The age and desirability of those games has often been in question though, with this months offerings being 2008′s Civilization Revolution and 2011′s Dungeon Defenders.
By comparison the March games on PlayStation Plus include the brand new port Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition for PlayStation 4; 2013 games Tomb Raider, Thomas Was Alone, and Lone Survivor: Directors Cut for PlayStation 3; and Unit 13 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PS Vita.
Currently Games with Gold is only available for the Xbox 360, but Microsoft has promised an announcement for the Xbox One quite soon.
