United £15m swoop could lead to Verm warfare at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger could face another test of his Arsenal popularity with Manchester United preparing a swoop for his club captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Gunners manager saw #wengerout trending earlier this week when his decision not to pursue an option to sign Cesc Fabregas led to the midfielder joining Chelsea from Arsenal.
Arsenal would be prepared to let Vermaelen leave for around £15million with the centre half having played second fiddle to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season.
Although United are leading the race to sign Vermaelen, the player himself is thought to be in two minds with Arsenal able to offer Champions League football.

And, with Robin van Persies move to Old Trafford fresh in the memory, Gunners fans would be unlikely to take kindly to another of their favourites making the trip north.
However, Wenger has already proved in the Fabregas case that sentimentality wont get in the way as he looks to protect Arsenals best interests.
Winning the FA Cup has strengthened the Frenchmans hand after nine trophy-less years but Arsenal fans are fed up of seeing their players end up in the hands of their rivals.
And Vermaelens departure would be another blow with Bacary Sagna set to leave for Manchester City after the World Cup.
