report Swansea1 Tottenham 2
With defeats to Liverpool and Fulham coming either side of a disappointing 4-1 Europa League drubbing at the hands of Inter Milan, the pressure was on Spurs to get their domestic campaign back on track.
And Vertonghen and Bale ensured Andre Villas-Boas' side did exactly that with first-half goals to put the viistors in control.
AVB endured a nail-biting end to the game after Michu pulled one back for Swansea but the visitors held on to pick up three precious points.
Champions League chasers Tottenham made the perfect start when Vertonghen broke the deadlock after just seven minutes.
The centre-back strode out from defence and found Bale before continuing his run. Welshman Bale flicked it back into his path and Vertonghen finished exquisitely on the half-volley.
A bit of Bale magic doubled the advantage in the 21st minute and left Swansea fancing an uphill struggle to salvage a result.
This time, Vertonghen turned provider by driving a pass to his team-mate on the edge of the box. The ball skipped up off Bales right boot before the in-form star thundered a left-foot volley beyond a helpless Michel Vorm.
The Swans flew out of the blocks in the second half and were unlucky not to pull one back in the 49th minute when a quick free-kick saw Michu denied by a fantastic save from Brad Friedel.
Spurs then came close to a third goal as Gylfi Sigurdsson cut in from the left before his bending effort was well saved by Vorm.
With the Londoners seemingly in control, Swansea pulled one back 19 minutes from time when Michu pulled away from Michael Dawson to head home a corner.
But it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Tottenham held on to leapfrog Chelsea and move back into third.
