On this day: Giggs seals derby win for Man Utd
On this day: 6 April 1996 Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United
Manchester Uniteds attempt to win the Barclays Premier League title received a massive boost as winger Ryan Giggs sealed a dramatic victory over rivals Manchester City.
The match took place only three days after title-chasing Newcastle United crashed to a dramatic 4-3 defeat at Liverpool but Man Utd knew that work still had to be done.
Going into the match they were only three points clear of the Magpies, having played a match more, while City were battling for their Premier League lives at the other end of the table.
United had the perfect start when Eric Cantona scored from the penalty spot on seven minutes after Nicky Summerbee had fouled Denis Irwin in the area.
City replied just before the break when new signing Mikhail Kavelashvili prodded home but Uniteds lead was restored a minute later, Andrew Cole firing in from Cantonas pass.
Substitute Uwe Rosler equalised again for City with a powerful strike but it was Giggs who had the last word 13 minutes from time with Cantona again the provider.
Manchester United ended up winning the League title by four points from Newcastle while City suffered the heartbreak of relegation on goal difference.
