Is Arsenals £30million bid for Luis Suarez the real deal or a big bluff
In the main, there are two schools of thought to Arsenals £30million bid for Luis Suarez.
The first, being that Arsene Wenger has truly gone bananas and is finally playing the Football Manager-esque transfer strategy that fans have been dreaming of (and frequently practising in darkened bedrooms) for the last ten years.
The second, is that Arsenal are playing a devious game to force Real Madrid into finally rubber-stamping their offer for Gonzalo Higuain.
Of course, there is merit to this second theory.
Moving for Madrids prime target to replace Higuain (who the club have largely accepted is leaving anyway) will turn up the heat on the Spaniards to accept Arsenals below-asking-price offer for the Argentine.
Sneaky old goats!
But what of the first theory
To me, the Suarez bid smells like more than just a smokescreen.
Hasnt Wenger always maintained he is ready to spend big money on a truly world class talent
So in his defence, what truly world class players have exchanged between clubs for anything less than extortionate fees in the last 10 years
Im not talking about players who have since turned into world beaters (ala Yaya Toure, whose fee was still extortionate at the time). Im talking about out-and-out top-name talent, who have moved for less than a kings ransom
And Im struggling!
At 26, Suarez still has his best footballing years ahead of him, can still be sold in the future for a sizeable fee if need be, and is probably among the top five strikers in world football.
This strikes me as value, and well worth a £30m opening gambit (especially if a move for Higuain last week was starting to grate).
Clearly £30m was never going to cut it, but £37-40m mightand in todays market, thatd still be value.
Of course, the Gunners may still end up bagging Higuain (and all signs point to it being far more likely), but to me, the Suarez bid smells like more than just a smokescreen.
