Manchester United are readying a £15million bid for Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay as concerns grow over Nemanja Vidics long-term fitness.
United boss David Moyes has turned his attention to doing business for Garay, after captain Vidic was ruled out of the clubs pre-season tour with an ongoing back problem.
The Serbian is set to recover quicker than expected, but his long-term injury complaints have given Moyes food for thought ahead of the new season.
And with deputies Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones also missing matches through knocks last term, United are ready to move for Garay to partner Rio Ferdinand next term.
The Benfica centre back has been a target for United for around 18 months, but Moyes is ready to bite the bullet and try and pull off the transfer.
According to reports in Portugal, United are ready to open the bidding at £15m, and would even consider throwing Luis Nani or Bebe into the package to get a deal done.
Garay would be interest in a move to the Premier League, but his outstanding performances for Benfica mean he will be costly, with a fee of £25million more likely.
