Spurs miss out on Christian Benteke as striker signs new Aston Villa deal
Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has withdrawn his transfer request and signed a new contract until 2017 with the club.
The Belgian international, who joined the Villans last summer for £7m from Genk, told the club he wished to leave earlier this month.
But despite strong speculation the 22-year-old would be on his way to Tottenham, Benteke has completed a u-turn and committed his future to Villa for the next four years.
I spoke with the Manager when I returned to training and we had a good talk. I am very happy to be back here in Birmingham and at Aston Villa, and to sign a new contract, he told the clubs website.
This is a great Club and it has given me a lot. Now I have to give back to my team-mates and the fans who have always been right behind me.
I need to be better than last year.
And Villa boss Paul Lambert admitted he was delighted to keep the youngster at Villa Park.
I had a full and frank discussion with Christian Benteke on his return to training this week regarding his future, he said.
It is my opinion that the best thing for Christian is to remain at Aston Villa. He enjoyed a terrific first season at the Club and can use that as a platform to hopefully enjoy more success this season.
