Newcastle open talks over Bafetimbi Gomis transfer as they prepare to sell Papiss Cisse
Newcastle have opened talks with Lyon over a £7million deal for Bafetimbi Gomis as they start to plan for life without Papiss Cisse.
The Magpies are resigned to losing Cisse after he refused to play for the club because of their shirt sponsorship deal with loan company Wonga.
A meeting was held earlier this week between the 28-year-old and the PFA, but with no conclusion in sight Newcastle have turned to Gomis as a replacement.
Lyon confirmed on Wednesday that Alan Pardew is a keen admirer of the player but it is now thought that talks have taken place over a move for the French striker.
Gomis is desperate to try his hand in the Premier League and nearly moved to Swansea earlier this month, before they bought Wilfried Bony from Vitesse Arnhem instead.
However, he is still pushing for a switch to England and Newcastle believe they will be able to land him shortly.
Pardew is desperate to add significant depth to his strikeforce, but progress has been slow on deals for other targets including Darren Bent and Loic Remy.
Gomis would not blow the budget at £7million, while Newcastle expect to raise at least £10million by flogging Cisse to one of the Russian clubs interested.
Anzhi, CSKA Moscow and Zenit are all monitoring him, while Italian outfit Inter Milan are also keen.
Newcastle expect to move closer to a resolution on both Gomis and Cisse by the middle of next week.
