David Moyes has always been generally perceived to be one of the more savvy, popular Premier League managers so it is sad to see Manchester Uniteds new boss fall out with former club Everton over moves for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.
Moyes low-balled the Toffees with his first offer, which the Merseysiders described as derisory, and then upset them further when he suggested the Goodison Park hierarchy were holding back the duos careers.
United are still expected to launch another attempt to sign Belgium international midfielder Fellaini and he is 8/15 with Ladbrokes to follow his ex-manager to Old Trafford and 7/4 with the same firm to stay where he is.
But it is not so clear as to Moyes intentions over England left-back Baines as Patrice Evra has started the new season exceptionally well.
Baines is 11/13 with Bwin to stay with Everton, which looks the smart bet, while he is 7/4 with Sky Bet to join United.
Newcastle can put a slow start to the season behind them with a win at Morecambe tonight in the Capital One Cup.
The Magpies are prime candidates for an upset in some quarters but they have enough quality in their ranks to overcome this hurdle.
