Liverpool need extra time to see off Notts County in Capital One Cup
Liverpool narrowly avoided embarrassment after League One Notts County took them to extra-time in the second round of the Capital One Cup.
First-half goals from England duo Raheem Sterling and in-form Daniel Sturridge looked to have put the Reds through to the third round but County stunned Anfield to draw level.
Yoann Arquin headed home Countys first in the 62nd minute and Adam Coombes cooly slotted the equaliser with six minutes remaining, but extra-time goals from Sturridge and Jordan Henderson saw the Reds progress safely through to the third round.
Rather than treating the game as an unwelcome fixture, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers included five players who started Saturdays Premier League game at Aston Villa in the hope the selection would be enough to see off the visitors.
The decision looked a good one when Sterling rifled a low drive into the corner in the fourth minute to open the scoring.
Sturridge increased the lead in the 29th minute with no backlift the England striker arrowed his shot into the corner after Steven Gerrard found him just outside the area.
The Reds captain struck the woodwork just before the break as the hosts threatened to run riot.
