English football fans could soon be charged £2,000 for a season ticket for the first time despite a 2.4 per cent drop in prices as a whole.
Arsenal supporters are paying a maximum £1,955 this campaign, with north London rivals Tottenham not far behind with a top price of £1,895, according to a BBC study.
The most expensive season ticket in the second-tier Championship is at Ipswich Town, whose £1,061 premium is more costly than all Premier League equivalents except Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs.
Sports minister Hugh Robertson welcomed the overall fall in prices, a year after the average cost of the cheapest tickets available rose by 11 per cent.
He said: It is good news for fans but it does come after a long period of incremental rises year on year.
I think clubs are beginning to understand what fans are going through and to adjust their prices accordingly.
I just hope clubs across the board seek to do all they can to make football an affordable pursuit for individuals and for families.
FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic, who now ply their trade in the Championship, are offering some of the best-priced season tickets in the division at £355 for adults who renew this term.

They also offer under-fives free football for the season, if signed up alongside a parent.
Chairman Dave Whelan said: Money is so tight and our area is running at eight to nine per cent unemployed.
Its impossible to ask anyone to pay any more to watch football.
