Brilliant Swansea sweep Valencia aside in Europa League opener
Swansea stormed to the most famous win of their long history with a glorious 3-0 victory over former European Cup finalists Valencia in Spain.
If the last decade hadnt already been dramatic enough for the Welsh outfit the journey from League Two to the Premier League, winning the League Cup this was the wonderful icing on the cake.
The home side were forced to play 80 minutes with 10 men after defender Adil Rami was sent off for hauling down Wilfried Bony, but the Swans deserve immense credit for taking advantage of the extra man in style.
Bony put the visitors in front in the 14th minute at the Mestalla with his fifth goal in eight games, picking the ball up after good work from Alejando Pozuelo and Michu, and firing home with the help of a deflection.
Pozuelo, one of Swanseas top performers on the night, was involved in their second goal too, setting up Michu, who smashed into the net past a despairing Vicente Guaita after 58 minutes.
The win was sealed four minutes later when Jonathan de Guzman curled a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner, putting the travelling supporters in dreamland.
An ecstatic Swansea boss Michael Laudrup said: Its very pleasing to win here against such a big side. Ive only been at the club 15 months so others can say where the win ranks in history, but it is a fantastic evening and a fantastic result.
Of course a red card early in the game was an influence but we dominated the game from the first to the last minute. We had a lot of fans here I think weve given them a night to remember.
