Take Jose Mourinho. His second coming was billed as just the fillip Chelsea needed after the disastrous Rafa Benitez era (top three finish and a European trophy, on your bike).
Fast forward three months and Joses gone a month without a win and, ahead of Tuesdays embarrassing defeat to Basle, he scrambled his young squads brains by talking eggs when he should have been telling them to mark Marco Streller.
Crisis time at the Bridge say the papers. But never mind, by the end of the month Chelsea will be revived, as sure as eggs are eggs.
David Moyes is another one. What were initially legitimate questions about his suitability for Manchester United spiralled out of proportion after a hit-and-miss summer in the transfer market and a few grumbles about early results and selection.
Moyes did not know what it took to manage United, suggested the doubters a dubious premise based on the assumption that they did. Yet now, ship steadied and Wayne Rooney back firing on all cylinders, Moyes has been given the benefit of the doubt.
On Sunday, United are in derby action against Manchester City and Manuel Pellegrini, another man whose reputation has been revised and reinvented since he arrived at the Etihad Stadium this summer. In dispatches, the kindly-looking Chilean was billed as a relaxed purveyor of attractive attacking football. Wrongly binned by Real Madrid, at Villarreal and Malaga hed shown the knowledge and lightness of touch to revive moribund City after the cheerless end of Roberto Mancinis reign.
Then City lost at Cardiff and were put under the cosh by Stoke and we wondered whether Pellegrini really had what it takes to manage here.
The truth, of course, is these are all good managers who will have bad days while finding their feet in their respective new jobs. Its why well probably get an exciting, unpredictable Premier League title race with plenty to write about. It may even be worth a read.
