Pack yer Baggs! Clarke axed after latest defeat
STEVE CLARKE has paid the price for West Broms transfer flops with his job.
Clarke, 50, was sacked and put on gardening leave after Albions 1-0 defeat at Cardiff their fourth straight loss.
Sporting and technical director Richard Garlick confirmed the dismissal of Clark.
Garlick said: With key games coming thick and fast, we felt it was important we acted now to give the club the best possible chance of a successful outcome this season.
Our player wage bill is the highest in the clubs history and we feel weve built a squad capable of being very competitive in the Premier League.
Former Chelsea and Liverpool No 2 Clarke had been on thin ice all season.
He needed his summer signings to produce the goods but they are languishing in 16th place in the Premier League.
Having failed to lure Chelseas Romelu Lukaku back for a second loan spell, Clarke twice broke Albions transfer record to bring in Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe.
But since beating Manchester United at Old Trafford in September, Albion have won just one match in 10.
Chairman Jeremy Peace was also unhappy that details of Clarkes contract were highlighted recently, forcing him to say the pair would hold talks in the New Year.
West Broms England Under-21 striker Saido Berahino was clearly stunned by the dismissal.
He tweeted: Wow I cant believe it, thats f*****g s**t!!!!
Joint-assistant head coach Keith Downing will take control of first-team affairs while the club searches for a new boss.
Former Fulham manager Martin Jol, who played for West Brom from 1982 to 1984, is readily available to replace Clarke.
Cardiff chief Malky Mackay will be another leading candidate, while former Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo could also come into consideration.
But Peace sacked him in 2011 for political reasons and it would be a surprise if he returned.
